SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team endured a second straight overtime loss on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 nailbiter to Grand Canyon University in the Pacific West Conference opener.

Grand Canyon (3-1-0/1-0-0) managed to foot a ball in front of the goal right before intermission and Dominican keeper Megan Herring got her hands on the shot but wasn't able to hold on for the save. Coming out of halftime trailing 1-0, the Lady Penguins (0-4-0/0-1-0) responded with a header by Shayna Elkins fed by Julianna Bratsberg from a perfectly placed kick by Katie Brown. The two teams stayed deadlocked the rest of regulation and overtime was needed to decide things.

With three minutes left in overtime, Tori Selesia placed a shot on goal but it was blocked by GCU's Stephanie Phillips. Dominican recovered the ball but was unable to convert. Play headed the other way and Veronica Nikas found Julia Anglin downfield on the cross for the game winning goal.

Grand Canyon held a slight 16-12 edge in the shooting column. Grand Canyon took six more corner kicks that Dominican. Both teams played aggressively, with seven fouls going against the 'Lopes and eight going against the Lady Penguins. Brooke Apodaca led Dominican with three shots taken.

"The first goal was preventable and until that point we played pretty well and controlled the flow of the game," said Dominican Head Coach Jon Delano. "I feel good about the direction we're headed as a young team. The girls work hard and when we put together a full 90 minutes things will happen."

Dominican hosts Dixie State College in another PacWest contest on Wedneday, September 22. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. after the men's soccer match.
