Penguins leave it all on the pitch in PacWest Championship

SAN DIEGO – Dominican women's soccer fell 2-1 to Point Loma on a golden goal in the second overtime of the PacWest Championship at the PLNU Soccer Field.

The teams were basically even statistically with the Sea Lions (10-3-5, 5-1-4 PacWest) having the 17-13 edge in shots, while the Penguins (9-2-9, 5-1-4 PacWest) held the 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

The wind and rain created chaotic conditions as the ball proved difficult to track early and Dominican took early advantage with two shots on frame in the first 10 minutes, but Julia Pinnell made saves off the attempts by Jenna Pevenage and Carson Warfield. Michelle Salas Viniegra saw the action move to the front of her goal over the next 10 minutes but tracked the ball well and returned the favor making a save on a shot from Alyssa Ketcham and cutting out several other dangerous cross attempts. Emma Majors had the best look from either team as she turned and sent a right-footed shot towards the net for the Sea Lions but could not fool Salas Viniegra who collected the save. Kylee Jerome took advantage of the wind at her back in the 38th minute as she took a shot from long distance and it carried with the wind over the fingertips of Salas Viniegra for the 1-0 PLNU lead.

The Sea Lions dominated possession for long stretches in the second half, but Janae Schwan worked her way into the box and kept a defender on her hip while aiming towards the left post but Pinnell was there to make the diving save to keep her lead. A foul in the 82nd minute set Dominican up with a free kick in a dangerous spot and Schwan delivered a perfect ball to the head of Pevenage who headed it into the net and tie the match 1-1. Schwan drew another free kick less than a minute later and this time took a go at it herself aiming towards the bottom right corner but Pinnell covered it up.

The game entered overtime with Schwan taking aim at the first opportunity at a golden goal for either team from the top of the box, but Pinnell covered it up to keep the game going past the 93rd minute. Maddy Saruwatari had two good looks for the Sea Lions in the 97th minute but both attempts sailed high over the bar. Saruwatari got the winner in the 104th minute off a corner that she just poked in near post for the 2-1 golden goal winner.
