SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Dominican women's soccer dominated the run of play from the start and took a 2-0 victory over Westmont to clinch its first appearance in the PacWest Championships field Saturday at Thorrington Field.
Ashlynn Hill followed up her Thursday heroics with her third goal of the year to go with an assist for the Penguins (9-1-8, 5-1-4 PacWest).
Megan Clapinski added to her single season record with a ninth goal of the season while also surpassing Lauren Gollnick's program record during the NCAA Division II era of 19 points as she now has 21 on the season. The Warriors (5-11-0, 5-5-0 PacWest) faced heavy pressure throughout the game as goalkeeper Ellie Ludwig finished with six saves on the day.Â
Dominican as the aggressor from the beginning of the game stringing together possession and opportunities. The first came in the seventh minute as
Jenna Pevenage collected a soft clearance near the top of the box and chipped it high but Ludwig leapt and punched the ball off her crossbar to keep her net clean.
Janae Schwan earned a free kick from the top right corner of the box in the 21st minute and then delivered a perfect ball back post to Hill who this time squared up the ball cleanly and headed it back across the face of the keeper and into the netting for the 1-0 lead.Â
Westmont's first attempt on frame came in the 30th minute as Ainsley Martin took a chance from about 30-yards out but she lacked the power and
Michelle Salas Viniegra easily collected the attempt.
Carson Warfield countered with an attempt of her own less than a minute later as she aimed for the top left corner with Ludwig leaping and collecting the ball to keep it a one-score game. The Warriors best scoring chance came in the 40th minute as Amelia Villa worked her way into the box and snuck a shot between two defenders aiming a bit too high as the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and away from harm.
It did not take the Penguins long to strike again in the second half as Ashlynn Hill headed forward a long pass to Clapinski who found herself with the ball and only the keeper to beat, slotting home a ball inside the left post for the 2-0 lead within the first 28 seconds. The Penguins didn't need much more of a cushion as their midfield and backline continued to dominate the match as Madeline Steinbach had the best scoring opportunity for Westmont with a strike from 25-yards out that hit off the top side of the crossbar in the 75th minute.Â
Dominican's final seed will come down to the result of the the University of Hawai'i at Hilo vs Hawai'i Pacific match.  Â
