SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Friday, falling 2-1 in overtime to visiting St. Martin's University.
Noelle Bauer got the Saints (1-2) in the books just 42 seconds into the game when she put back a ball that deflected off of Dominican (0-3) keeper
Megan Herring's save.
Having been subbed in just 33 seconds earlier,
Marli Sangervasi found
Lexi Humphry in front of the goal at the 40 minute mark and Humphry dumped a goal in to tie the game before halftime.
The two teams stayed deadlocked in the second half, although Dominican pounded nine unsuccessful shots to just four by St. Martin's. Dominican had another shot in overtime but Jill Webb's fast break goal from 18 yards out in the ninety first minute gave the Saints the win.
The Lady Penguins outshot the Saints 17 to 11.
Brooke Apodaca placed three shots on goal for Dominican. Herring made six saves in 91 minutes of play.
“Despite the early goal, I think that this is our best performance yet this season but sometimes soccer can be a cruel game,” Dominican Head Coach
Jonathan Delano said. “We've made a positive step in the right direction and have improved after our Southern California roadtrip. The girls have confidence in themselves and we'll be ready for conference play.”
Dominican will look for their first win on Thursday, September 16 when they open against Grand Canyon University in Pacific West Conference play. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. or 20 minutes following the preceding men's game, which is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
