BOX SCORE
KANEOHE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team is becoming far too accustomed to one-goal games, having had one goal decide the outcome in seven of the Lady Penguin's 11 matches this season. On Thursday, Dominican began its four-game swing through Hawai'i with a tough 1-0 loss to Pacific West Conference opponent Hawai'i Pacific University.
The crucial play of the day came at the 52-minute mark, when Meghan Fuller broke away from the Dominican (4-6-1/3-3-1) defense after HPU (4-7-0/4-4-0) played the call out from a Lady Penguin corner kick. Fuller took a shot, only to have it blocked by Dominican keeper
Megan Herring. The ball deflected back to Fuller but Herring was there to stop another attack. Unfortunately for Herring and the the Lady Penguins, the third time was the charm for Fuller, as she netted the eventual game winner.
Dominican's offense got off to a slow start, taking only one shot in the second half. They fired off eight shots in the second half though. The Lady Penguins also held a 4-1 corner kick advantage but were unable to take advantage of those situations.
Herring finished the day with seven saves. Dominican Head Coach
Jon Delano noted that despite the HPU score, "Herring did fantastic. It's unfortunate that we we started poorly for the first 20 to 25 minutes and were unable to help her out."
Dominican heads to the north side of the island looking to hand first place BYU-Hawaii its first loss on Saturday. Kickoff against the Seasiders is scheduled for 12:30 p.m./3:30 p.m. Pacific.
