BELMONT, Calif. — Megan Herring helped the Dominican University of California women's soccer team earn a point by not allowing any. The freshman goalkeeper recorded her first collegiate shut out for the Lady Penguins (3-4-1/3-1-1) with six saves in a 0-0 overtime draw with Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont on Friday.

“I wish we could have won it, but the whole defense put up a great fight,” Herring said. “Hopefully it's the first of many [shutouts].”

Herring stopped every shot on goal and successfully punched out several crosses from the Argonauts (4-4-1/2-2-1) in the 110 minute match despite battling sun in her eyes the entire second half and the first overtime period.

“It's always tough playing on the road, but it was really good to get a clean sheet,” Dominican Head Coach Jon Delano said. “Megs was fantastic today. Her control of the box is crucial to our success,”

Herring made a few crucial saves, but the biggest came off a Samantha Paetz free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 88th minute.

Julianna Bratsberg couldn't continue her PacWest Conference Player of the Week hot streak on offense, but the stingy Lady Penguin defense fended off all opposing attacks from NDNU just long enough.

Delano was just as pleased with his defenders' performance.

“I though our defense was fantastic with Katie Brown, Christine Coleman, Shayna Elkins, Michelle Mason and Kathryn Ripple,” Delano said.

Dominican appeared to have the only goal of the afternoon midway through the first half, but Tori Selesia was called offsides before scoring. Selesia had a team-high four shots, two on the goal.

The Lady Penguins have needed extra time to get a result in four of their last six matches. The women are 1-2-1 now when they go to overtime this season.

The women take on the Academy of Art University (0-6) in San Francisco on Thursday, October 7 before leaving for a five game road trip in Hawaii.
