Adrian Aguirre leads the pack on the way to his second PacWest 110H Title

Aguirre sets conference record to claim second individual title

FRESNO, Calif. – Adrian Aguirre won his second consecutive PacWest Championship in the 110-meter hurdles in record fashion to lead Dominican track and field Saturday at the PacWest Track & Field Championships at the FPU Track.

Fresno Pacific won the men's title with 231 points to break Azusa Pacific's streak of eight straight titles with the Cougars finishing second with 144 points. APU won the women's title to run its streak to nine with 209 points. The Penguins scored 16 points on the men's side to finish ninth and two on the women's side to place 10th.

Aguirre started strong on the first day as he beat the previous PacWest Championships record in the preliminary round cruising to qualification with a time of 13.70 seconds. Grand Canyon's Tyler Sipes had held the record for 12 years winning the 2013 championships with a time of 13.89 seconds. If his competitors thought he had expended all his efforts the first go round, they were sorely disappointed in the finals as Aguirre pulled away from the field and broke the record a second time while also setting a personal best finish of 13.64 seconds. Parker Williams of CUI was in second place with a finish of 14.22 seconds.

Courtney Santos claimed the first team point for the women in Friday's last event of the day, the 10,000 meters. Santos entered the meet as the Penguins record holder in the event and she blew past her previous best pace by more than 23 seconds to take eighth overall with a time of 38:42.32. Caytlin Capulong and Miekayla Surnip each set personal bests on the first day competing in javelin as Capulong sent her second toss 35.14m, a school record, to finish second in her flight and 10th overall in the event. Surnip set her personal best on the first throw with a mark of 33.26m to finish right behind her teammate in 11th.

Andrew Reinhard handed the men a team point in the javelin with a throw of 49.52m to finish eighth. Bella Bueno set a new program and personal record in the 1500m as she finished 15th with a time of 4:47.63 and did the same a few hours later in the 800m as she crossed the line in 11th place with a time of 2:18.35. LaNicia Ellis also set a program record on the first day in the 400m as she finished 12th with a time of 57.50 with Jalydon Love setting a personal best of 50.14 in the men's 400m. Daniel Salmeron Romo set the last personal best of the first day on the men's side as he finished 16th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:11.02 to top Devon Hammeke of Jessup.

Gabe Sanchez kept the records coming in the first men's field event Saturday with his third throw in shot put landing 11.40m away to top his previous school record by .3 meters. Capulong and Ellis joined Vivian Rodrigues and Tatyana Robles in the 4x100 relay as the team edged Jessup by .7 second to take eighth with a time of 51.16 and earning the second team point for the women. The final points and team record came in the 4x400 relay as Aguirre joined Worth Gutierrez, Jalydon Love and Diego Montag to break the school record by more than five second to take fourth  over Westmont, CUI, Vanguard and Jessup.

The season will continue for those close to qualifying for the NCAA Championships with the next meet coming at the APU Last Chance beginning May 8 at Cougar Athletic Stadium.
