LIVERMORE, Calif. – Dominican men's golf got off to a fast start and recorded its best finish of the season as they placed third overall at the NNU Nighthawks Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course.
No. 45 Holy Names had a strong finish to the tournament to win the team championship with a 15 over par with No. 32 Cal State East Bay in second at 18 over. The Penguin rode its first round of 3-over 291 on its way to third place as they finished third at 22 over par.
Josh Morris led the way for the second straight tournament as he caught fire starting on the second hole posting 11 pars and three biridies over the next 14 holes as he finished even par in the first round. He followed up with a strong finish with a birdie on 17 as he placed fourth overall at three over par for the tournament.
Christian Schrodt also started strong on day one as he posted four birdies in his opening round to tie with Morris for second overall for the day at even par. While he slowed some in the second round Schrodt also claimed a top-10 finish as he posted a 4-over 76 in the second round to tie for fifth.
Benjamin Gould had a strong back-nine in his first round with two biridies and four pars over the final six holes to finish at 1-over 73 in his opening round. Gould added a 78 in his second round to tie for 13th overall at 7 over par.
Elliott Nielsen started his opening round with seven straight pars and a birdie on his way to a 2-over 74. He also had a 78 in his second round to tie for 15th at 8 over.
Sam Nielsen rounded out the team as he finished strong in his opening round with two birdies and five pars on the back nine to post a 77 before adding a second day score of 81 to finish at 14 over par and tie for 37th.
Dominican will return to the course Monda at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay at Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda.
