Penguins finish 13th at Hanny Stanislaus Invitational

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican men's golf moved up one spot on the final day to finish 13th at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf & Country Club in a packed field that featured 10 ranked teams.
 
Western Washington won the team title at 7 over par for the tournament to beat out Simon Fraser who surged up seven spots on the final day to finish second at 17 over. The Penguins finished at 59 over par  to beat out Saint Martin's and Montana State Billings by two strokes with Academy of Art in 16th at 91 over par.
 
Christian Schrodt set the tone for Dominican early in the first round as he shot six birdies in the first round, going two under par on the back nine to lead the team at even par. He then added 10 pars in the second round Monday to go with an eagle on the par 5 third hole to finish with a 75, and added a 76 in his final round to tie for 20th at 7 over par. Elliott Nielsen was consistent over his first two rounds posting 13 pars in round one and 10 more in the second round to finish with scores of 75 and 74 respectively. While he slowed down in the rainy final round, Nielsen tied for 51st on the individual board at 13 over par. 
 
Josh Morris posted rounds of 78, 78 and 79 on his way to a tie for 74th overall at 22 over par. Sam Nielsen had some bright spots in the first round going one over in the back nine, but struggled in his second round. He then regrouped and led the Penguins in the final round to help them move up as a team as he had three birdies and 11 pars in the final round to finish with a 2-over 74 and tie for 85th overall. Benjamin Gould rounded out those counting towards the team score as he finished 92nd at 29 over par.
 
Derek Hamilton led the golfer's competing as individuals from Dominican as he tied with Schrodt for 20th at 7-over, having the lowest round of any Penguin with a 1-under 71 in the first round of the tournament.  Sean Buckles tied for 76th in the tournament at 23 over par.
 
Dominican will compete next at the NCAA West Regional Preview beginning the first round Monday, April 10 at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park.
