San Rafael, CALIF. – Dominican University of California (11-11, 7-8) made restitution with its loss to the Sharks from just two weeks ago as junior
Garrett Siebels' career-night helped Dominican earn a lopsided 89-74 victory over Hawaii Pacific University (7-14, 4-10).
The Sharks found their footing over the recent weeks, earning victories over conference-ranked No. 3 Azusa Pacific and Holy Names but Siebels helped put an end to that notion with a career-best 32 points off a remarkable six 3-pointers and 79% overall shooting from the field. Freshman
PJ Volz added another impressive stat line to his young resume with 18 points, five rebounds and two assists while junior
Marcus McCutchen netted 12 points, seven rebounds and an assist.
An early
Jaayden Bush basket was met by five straight HPU points before Siebels buried his first 3-pointer of the afternoon, then following it up with another long ball just two possessions later to cap off a 7-0 Dominican run. Siebels' third 3-pointer in as many minutes gave Dominican a 12-7 advantage prior to the midway mark of the opening half as the junior's sharpshooting from deep accounted for all but three of the Penguins' points. McCutchen then earned tallies just 75 seconds apart to give Dominican a six point advantage but the deficit shifted minutes later after a Sharks long ball helped them retake a two-point lead. Dominican's final bucket of the game came in thunderous fashion after Siebels drove the lane and finished with a momentous slam before one final basket from HPU set the score to 34-34 at the half.
Graduate student
Justin Brown earned the half's first basket with a two-handed slam after spinning to shake off his defender to create a clear lane. Volz and McCutchen added buckets on the possessions that followed to give Dominican a six-point cushion before a single HPU foul shot separated another 9-0 Dominican run that was capped by a McCutchen layup in the lane. The deep shots kept falling as this time it was Siebels and sophomore
Jake Blazona that hit from deep to give Dominican a 17-point, 65-48 advantage.
Everyone joined in on the party that Siebels was hosting behind the arc as Volz drained a 3-pointer of his own to give Dominican its largest lead of the game before another 3-pointer came off the hands of Volz minutes later as he helped his team grasp their lopsided lead. HPU elected to foul, for the most part, down the stretch but Dominican's last basket came with 36 seconds left as the Sharks called off their foul spree, giving Siebels the time and space he needed to lay-in his final basket of his career evening to send his team off the floor with an 89-74 victory.
