LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Dominican women's golf used a strong start on the front nine to jump ahead of Biola for first place at the PacWest Golf Championships after Tuesday's second round at Wigwam Golf Course.
The Penguins had the best round of the tournament so far with a 17-over 305 to improve by six strokes and pass up Biola by one stroke on the team leaderboard with a two day total of 42 over par. Holy Names moved into third place at 45 over par to round out the top-3.
Claire Shubin was flawless on the front nine as she had eight pars with a birdie on eight to make the turn at one under.
Lauren Parayno did the same with her birdie coming on five while
Angelica Antonio made the turn at 1 over with two birdies and four pars to start the round. The trio of strong starts erased the five stroke deficit Dominican had coming into the round.
The back nine continued to be difficult for all golfers but Dominican held fast to their lead. Shubin had six more pars on the back nine to finish the day at 2-over 74 and retain her one stroke lead over three-time PacWest Individual Champion Anahi Servin at 4 over par. Antonio had the best finish for the Penguins with six pars and a birdie as she tied Shubin with a 74 of her own to finish tied for third with a 36-hole total of 6 over.
Parayno had two birdies on her back nine as she finished the round with a 3-over 75 to climb 13 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th at 15 over par.
Alissa Salazar added a 9 over par to finish in a tie for 18th 17 over for the tournament and
Phoebe Sundberg finished the day tied for 30th at 27 over par.
Dominican will look to finish strong Wednesday in the final round as they tee off at 8 a.m. MST.
