LITCHFIELD PARK, Calif. –
Claire Shubin made a late push over the final four holes to finish on top after the first round of the PacWest Women's Golf Championships leading Dominican women's golf into a tie for second place at Wigwam Golf Course.
Biola entered the clubhouse in first as a team with a 20-over 308 with Academy of Art and Dominican five strokes behind them in a tie for second. Holy Names was in fourth at 27 over par while Hawaii Hilo and Point Loma rounded out the top-5 tied at 29 over par in an extremely competitive field.
Shubin was fairly consistent in the front nine with six pars making the turn at 2 over par, after moving to 1 over on a bogey on 14, Shubin ended her round with three pars and a birdie on 17 to leapfrog Anahi Servin of Academy of Art and Brady Turnquist of Biola to enter the clubhouse with the one stroke lead at 2-over 74.
Angelica Antonio got off to a hot start with two birdies on her first five holes and never dropped below second place ending in a five way tie at 3 over par.
Alissa Salazar started her day with five pars as she ended her round in a tie for 16th at 8 over par.
Lauren Parayno added a 5 over par to tie for 28th with
Phoebe Sundberg in 31st at 14 over par.
The Penguins will tee off the second round at 8 a.m. MST at Wigwam Golf Course.
