GOODYEAR, Ariz. –
Claire Shubin and
Lauren Parayno led Dominican women's golf into a tie for seventh after the first round of the RJGA Palm Valley Classic at Palm Valley Golf Club.
Cal State Monterey Bay led all teams with a 1-under 287 with Cal State East Bay and Cal State LA tied for second at 9 over par. Dominican was tied with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for seventh at 15 over par, five strokes out of the top five and one stroke ahead of West Texas A&M and Cameron in a highly competitive field.
Shubin got out to a strong start with a birdie on her first hole and then finished strong with a 2 under on the back nine to finish the day at 2 over par and tied for 18th. Parayno was tied with her as she was very consistent throughout with a birdie and six pars on both the front and back nine.
Angelica Antonio was just behind them at 4 over par as she finished the day with two birdies and 10 pars in her opening round on her way to a tie for 35th on the individual leaderboard.
Phoebe Sundberg had a strong start to her day finishing as she made the turn at 1 over par before finishing the round with a 7-over 79 to tie for 74th.
Ashley Pan rounded out the team with a 10 over to tie for 114th for the Penguins.
Dominican will tee off at 9:10 a.m. PDT Tuesday in the second round of the tournament.
