Penguins climb leaderboard in final round of Bay Area Invitational

PLEASANTON, Calif. – Dominican men's golf finished the Bay Area Invitational with its best round of the week to move up two spots into eighth place at Ruby Hill Golf Club.

"This was a good final round for the team," head coach Gary Nelson said. "It is great to see Chris [Steib] and Christian [Schrodt] posting low scores for the team. This final round was also important because it will give Matt [Fry] the confidence he needs to perform at his best moving into the end of the season. We will look to improve better proximity from 120 yards from the flag and more stability in the wind."

Cal State San Marcos maintained their commanding lead atop the team leaderboard finishing at even par with Sonoma State finishing in second at 19 over par. The Penguins finished the day with a 297 to move past Saint Martin's and Stanislaus State into eighth place at 39 over par.

Schrodt led the way on the final day of the tournament as he began the day on a roll in the back nine finishing with three birdies to finish at 2 under before making the turn and shooting a 37 on the front nine. He moved up 46 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 22nd at 8 over par. Steib was tied with him in 22nd having moved up 13 spots on a strong showing on the front nine where he sank back-to-back birdies on hole four and five to finish the day with a 1-over 73.

Fry finished the day with 15 pars on his way to a final round of 3-over 75 to move up 11 spots into a tie for 36th. Josh Morris added a 6 over par in his final round as he too rose up the individual board by 19 spots to tie for 54th at 19 over par. Sam Nielsen finished one stroke behind him on the day with a 79 and also moved up 19 spots into a tie for 49th at 18 over par for the tournament.

Dominican will return to the course March 7 to compete in the NNU Poppy Ridge Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.
