HAYWARD, Calif. – Dominican track and field had a strong first meet as a program with six Penguins claiming the top spot in their events in the three team meet with Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay.
Men's recap
Eddie Silverbush led a group of four athletes from Dominican in the long jump with a mark of 5.70 meters followed closely by
Thomas Van Schoor's 5.63 meter jump. The Pioneers lone participant in the long jump failed to set a qualifying mark. Louie Galdamez beat out seven other athletes from both Dominican and CSUEB in shot put as his mark of 8.54 meters for the Penguins with the Pioneer's Daniil Menshikov the closest behind him by 1.04 meters in second place.
Van Schoor and Galdamez were teamed up with
Alexandre Bernier and Dom Galletti in the 4x100 meter relay with the foursome once again claiming victory for Dominican with a time of 47.43 to outpace CSUEB's squad by more than two seconds. It was only Penguins in the 400 meter dash with
Jacob Potere finishing in 56.45 with Silverbush close behind with a time of 57.26.
Wakilli Bennett opened his Penguin career with a 22.70 finish in the 200 meter dash to beat Mateo DiDomenico of CSUEB who finished in 23.87.
Jared Wright was the final Dominican athlete to claim the top finish in his event as he crossed the finish line of the 800 meter dash in 2:04.51 to top the Pioneer's Dylan Shubert by 4.3 seconds.
Women's recap
Julianna Mendez provided the top highlight in the women's meet for the Penguins as she outkicked Veronica Valenton in the 800 meter dash to finish atop the podium with a time of 2:27.41. Tanya Bills finished third in the shot put with a mark of 6.91 meters, trailing a pair of Seawolves led by Brittney Glor who posted an 8.97 meter throw in the event.
Morgan Semana also collected a third place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.53 while Jeida Lavendar of Sonoma State claimed the top spot crossing the finish line in 13.18 seconds. Isabella Bueno also earned a spot on the podium in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.29 with the Seawolves' Makayla Bernadez taking the top spot with a time of 26.83 seconds.
Dominican claimed second place in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay races. Semana and Bueno competed with Caitlyn Capulong and
Michelle Chang in the 4x100 for the Penguins as they finished in 54.95, 1.5 seconds behind Sonoma State's time of 53.47 while far outpacing CSUEB's time of 1:09.17. The Seawolves also claimed the top spot in the 4x400 with a time of 4:22.00 while Dominican's team of Mendez,
Emma Digman,
Tiffany Wong and
Emma Wuelfing crossed the line in 4:41.59 with the Pioneer's foursome finishing in 5:01.63.
Dominican will compete next in the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State on Saturday, March 5 in Turlock.
