SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Senior
Matt Fry led Dominican men's golf to a ninth-place finish to open the 2021-22 season Tuesday at the Sonoma State Men's Invite at Valley of the Moon.
Cal State San Marcos won the 11 team tournament at 15 over par, with Sonoma State finishing second at 26 over. The Penguins finished at 50 over to beat out Menlo and Academy of Art, while trailing PacWest rival Holy Names by four strokes for eighth.
Fry was consistent throughout the tournament as he posted scores of 5-over 75 and 2-over 72 on the first day of play. He then wrapped up with a final round of 74 to finish at 11 over par for the tournament to tie for 23rd. Redshirt junior

Derek Hamilton each finished with two rounds of 4-over 74 and one of 6-over 76 to finish at 10 over par and tie for 35th.

Sean Buckles had the top opening round for Dominican as he posted a 3-over 73 and finished the tournament at 16 over par to tie for 44th. Sophomore
Sam Nielsen tied Fry for the lowest round of the tournament for the Penguins with a 2-over 72 on his second 18 holes and finished tied for 64th at 24 over par.
Dominican will return to the course Friday, September 24, for the first round of the Saint Martin's Invitational at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington.
