Claire Shubin PacWest Tournament

Shubin, Fry earn spots in NCAA Regional for DII golf championship

San Rafael, Calif. – Dominican University golf's Matt Fry and Claire Shubin have been selected to participate in the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships, the NCAA announced.

"There was definitely a fist pump when I read the email and found out that these two players made it. I'm excited for the players, and for what they can potentially do with this opportunity," head coach Gary Nelson said.

This selection comes exactly four years to the day that Fry was cut from his previous golf team after being told he would struggle to competitively play golf at the NCAA Division II tournament.

"Four years ago today, on April 26, 2017, is when I got cut from my old school," Fry said. "The coach wasn't sure that I was good enough to play Division II golf. Four years later, it took a lot of personal growth and changes to get in a spot where I am good enough to accomplish something like this. It's great to look back on and reflect."

24 men's and women's individuals were given spots in their respective fields, with the first round of regionals slated to take place from May 6-8. Fry will travel to The Home Course in Dupont, Washington, for his regional, while Shubin will head south to the Windhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas, for her regional.

Shubin, ranked fourth among west regional golfers that were selected as individual participants in the NCAA regionals, is the first women's golfer to ever make regionals in the history of Dominican golf in the NCAA Division II era. Shubin's best finish this season came earlier in the year when she finished tied for first place at the Pioneer Shootout hosted by Holy Names University. The Pioneer Shootout also marked the first time a Dominican women's golf team finished first at a tournament event in NCAA Division II history.

"The main thing I think helped me out the most was my 3rd round at PacWest Championship. With everything that happened with the team, I knew that I still needed to play well even if the team was out of it. I think finishing off the championship with a score that I was proud of showed that I could compete in tough situations, which maybe helped out in getting me that 4th individual spot."

Fry, ranked second among west regional golfers that were selected as individual participants in the NCAA regionals, earned his spot on the heels of finishing 14th overall at the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament in Hawaii last week. Despite the 14th overall finish, Fry found himself in the fifth overall position on the first and second day of the tournament, reaching as high as second overall during the championship on day two.

"I had two good tournaments to start the year, two strong finishes that helped a lot, and then later in the season, I had some good rounds that helped my scoring average even if my finishes weren't as high. Some good finishes and good rounds helped me out," Fry said.

Shubin's regional is slated to begin in Texas on May 3 and run through May 5, while Fry's regional will take place in Washington from May 6-8.

"I owe Dominican so much," Fry said. "I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am right now without all the support and love from Dominican Athletics."
