Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis put up a strong fight in singles, but fell 7-0 to Concordia University Irvine on Monday.
The Eagles began the day with strong doubles play behind 6-1 victories by the duos of Taylor Lau and Lisa Suzuki, and Ghazal Pakbaten and Johanna Keeline. With the doubles point in hand, Halle Van Natta and Samantha Schuster added a 6-2 victory in No. 3 doubles to continue the momentum.
Lau took the first singles match of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over
Ofelia Lopez Camarena. Pakbaten followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over
Taylor Lim on the top court. Dominican was competitive in the remaining match with senior
Michelle Li keeping the first set with Keeline close in No. 4 singles, but she ultimately fell 6-3, 6-0.
Senior
Alex Wartenberg bounced back from a slow start in No. 4 singles to take four games in the second set, but Suzuki was able to hold her off for the 6-1, 6-4 win. Sophomore
Nicole Bermudez also battled hard to secure a set for the Penguins on court six, but Ghada Al-Ajeely held her off for the 6-4, 6-2 win. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Nguyen had a strong showing in No. 5 singles as she continues to battle through some early season injuries, winning a team best seven games. However, Schuster was able to finish off the sweep for CUI with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Dominican will head next to Chapman University for a match at 6 p.m. PDT Tuesday in Orange, California.
