SAN FRANCISCO – Dominican women's tennis fell 7-0 in an opening exhibition Friday against NCAA Division I University of San Francisco.
"Today went well," Dominican head coach
Cristina Visico said. "USF is a pretty tough team, but it was so great to get out there and the girls competed really well."
The Dons swept the doubles match to earn its first team point.
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar fell 6-0 on the first court to their USF opponents.
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Taylor Lim won three games on the second doubles court, while
Savannah Gray and
Alex Wartenberg claimed four games from their Don counterparts on the third court.
USF's Mya Bui won the first match of singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wartenberg. Lim had a strong start on the sixth court in a 6-3 set loss and fell 6-1 to Amber del Rosario in No. 6 singles. Gray was also strong in her first singles set challenging the Dons' Alisha Sharma in a 6-4 set loss, as Sharma went on to take the match.
Torres also took five games from her USF opponent in a 6-2, 6-3 loss on the second court, while Schaar fell 6-3, 6-0 to Emily Maxfield in No. 1 singles. Nguyen had the longest match of the day in No. 3 singles falling 6-3, 6-1 to USF's Margarita Treyes.
The Penguins will face another Division I opponent in its second exhibition Saturday at Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. PST.
