AZUSA, Calif. – Ricki Mae Torres and Taylor Lim each claimed victories in the first round of the ITA Regionals hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Torres opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Kyra Harames of Dixie State in the first round. She then fell in a tight match with Cassidy Ferrell of Stanislaus State 4-6, 6-0, 10-2 in the second round.
Lim won a tight first round battle with Courtney Page of Azusa Pacific 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 to advance. She then faced the top seed of the tournament Jensyn Warren of Sonoma State in the second round. Lim fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to Warren.
Skyler Schaar lost the first set 6-3 to Concordia Irvine's Samantha Schuster, but found momentum in the second set to take a 6-2 set victory. The tiebreaker was close, but Schuster prevailed 10-7.
Savannah Gray opened the tournament against the eventual champion and No. 3-seed Anastasilia Kuprina of Concordia Irvine and fell 6-2, 6-0.
Alex Wartenberg drew No. 4-seed Nikki Newell of Point Loma and fell 7-6, 6-0 to round out the singles play for the Penguins.
Kaitlyn Nguyen paired with Wartenberg in doubles to take on No. 4-seed Elizaveta Sokolova and Amanda Schneider of Cal State LA 8-3. Torres and Gray lost 8-4 to Kayla Nguyen and Miliaana Profit of Stanislaus State, while Schaar and Lim also fell 8-4 to Point Loma's Shelby Groeneveld and Ellie Gamble in the first round.
The Penguins fall season continues Oct. 14 in the UC Santa Cruz Tournament held in Santa Cruz, California.
