Aimee Steinwand became the first Penguin to record 1,000 kills, but Dominican women's volleyball fell Friday afternoon to Chico State 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 at Pioneer Gymnasium.
Steinwand led the Penguins (0-2) with a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs in the match. Cat Thomasen added six kills and
Josie Walser had 17 assists for Dominican.
The Wildcats (2-0) were led by Bekah Boyle's 14 kills and two blocks.
The Penguins and Wildcats traded runs and leads in the first set, with the Penguins taking a late 19-18 advantage on Walser's ace. The lead was short-lived as the Wildcats ended the set with a run of their own to win 25-19.
After falling behind early in the second set, Dominican ran off four-consecutive points to take a 7-6 lead. Chico responded with a 4-0 run of its own, but two setting errors against the Wildcats helped the Penguins tie the set 10-10. After Dominican fell behind again, Cat Thomasen had a kill and Steinwand added an ace during a 4-0 run that tied the set at 21, but the Wildcats answered to take the 25-21 set victory.
The third set saw see-saw scoring between the two teams until a strong block from Chico propelled a 4-point burst to give them a 17-14 lead. The Penguins were unable to string together a run to close the gap and the Wildcats took the match.
The Penguins will take on Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m. as they continue the Route 92 Showdown.
