SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Dominican University of California women's tennis team topped Hawaii Hilo on Sunday 7-2, marking the Penguins' fourth win in the last five matches.
During that stretch, Dominican has outscored its opponents 33-3 through the four victories. The Penguins now hold a 6-5 mark overall and a 4-3 record at home.
"This was a tremendous match for our team," Dominican head coach
Cristina Visico said. "Our team pulled out a tough one and the score was deceiving. Skyler provided the highlight of the match as she was able to defeat the same opponent that had defeated her last time out."
Dominican captured two the three doubles matchups on Sunday.
Cori Beeby and
Solveig Karlsen earned a thrilling 9-7 win at the No. 3 position.
The Penguins proved to be just as dominating in the singles portion of Sunday's match. Dominican defeated the Vulcans in five of the six singles contests, including straight-set victories in positions No. 3 through No. 6.
Karlsen earned the most lopsided win with a 6-1, 6-0 result at the No. 6 spot. In the No. 1 singles position,
Skyler Schaar rallied for a 1-6, 6-4 (10-7) victory over Daniela Sanz Caselli after falling to the same challenger earlier in March in Hawaii.
The Penguins will conclude their homestand on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. match against Dixie State.
