SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Taking advantage of a break from the rainy weather, the Dominican University of California tennis team captured a 5-3 season-opening victory on Sunday over Holy Names.
After a delayed start and drying of the courts, the Penguins (1-0) and Hawks (0-1) started action at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Dominican picked up two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Brooke Briseño and junior
Skyler Schaar secured an 8-3 result at the No. 1 spot. Then at the No. 2 position,
Alex Wartenberg and
Rickimae Torres combined for an exciting 8-6 victory.
Schaar proved to be victorious in the singles format as well, cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 result over HNU's Dominique Ernst at No. 3. The closest single matchup came at the No. 2 position, where Briseño edged Eliza McKean with a dominating 7-1 tiebreaker.
Wartenberg also earned a win in the singles competition while
Solveig Karlsen was leading her contest when the team results concluded.
Dominican will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a 12 p.m. home match against Academy of Art.
