SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Dominican University of California women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 result to Sonoma State on Friday at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The defeat drops the Penguins to 2-2 overall while the Seawolves improve to 4-4.
Through Friday's match, Dominican earned points with a pair of singles wins from
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar.
Torres, a junior from Danville, topped Sonoma's Amanda Zuidema 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Then at the No. 3 spot, Schaar defeated the Seawolves' Kaitlyn Haithcock with a thrilling 10-8 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-3, 3-6.
Despite Sonoma sweeping the doubles portion 3-0, the Penguins continued to battle through the singles matchups. Sophomore
Alex Wartenberg was involved in a back-and-forth showdown at the No. 4 position as she split the first two sets with Jordyn Kearney 6-4, 4-6. Kearney took the result with a 10-2 tiebreaker finish.
The Penguins will return to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. home match against American River.
