Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Dominican women's volleyball fell Wednesday night to the undefeated Cal Baptist Lancers 3-1 (25-17, 8-25, 9-25, 17-25) in the Van Dyne gymnasium.
Â
The Lancers (22-0, 14-0 PacWest) were able to subdue the Penguins' (9-13, 8-6 PacWest) offense as junior
Cat Thomason led Dominican with eight kills. Freshman Josie Walser earned a double-double of 10 digs and 27 assists while junior
Brittany Latigue had four blocks. For the Lancers, Lauren Hackett and McKenna Witt led their team on offense with 16 kills apiece while on defense, Yagoda Jedrzejczak earned nine blocks in the match.
Â
Dominican kicked off the first set with an early 3-1 lead on back-to-back kills from Thomason. Senior
Aimee Steinwand helped
kickstart a four-point Penguins run with three consecutive kills to extend the lead 7-2, followed by another pair of back-to-back kills from Thomason to maintain a 9-3 lead. Dominican maintained a steady lead over the Lancers, and a kill from Latigue sealed the only set victory for the Penguins 25-17.
Â
The momentum would disappear for Dominican as the next two sets belonged to Cal Baptist. The Penguins did take an early 2-0 lead with a service ace and kill by freshman Catherine Johnson and managed to keep it close early on in the second set. However, four attack errors by Dominican helped Cal Baptist go on a 6-point run to take an 11-5 lead. Another 6-point run for Cal Baptist at the end of the set, including three attack errors and two kills by McKenna and Madison Witt, helped Cal Baptist dominate the Penguins 25-8 and tie the match.
Â
The Lancers continued their dominance into the third set, going on a 10-4 run to open it up. Dominican had no response as Cal Baptist posted their third 6-point surge of the match, including two kills from Hackett. A kill by senior
Susanna Pilkerton stopped the Lancers surge briefly at 5-16, but Cal Baptist would cruise once again to a 25-9 victory.
Â
Dominican attempted to come back in the fourth set. After a quick 4-0 start for Cal Baptist, the Penguins continued to fall significantly behind at 15-6. Dominican came up with a quick turnaround on a 7-1 surge thanks to two consecutive kills from Johnson and three additional kills by Latigue. After cutting the margin to four, Cal Baptist used another 6-0 run to reclaim the 9-point lead. A Cal Baptist service error and attack error kept Dominican in it, but the Lancers would take advantage of a few Dominican mistakes to pull away with the fourth set victory 25-17 and cement the match victory.

The Penguins will take the court again Friday at Azusa Pacific for a 6 p.m. PST start. Live stats and video will be available for the match online.Â
