Box Score San Rafael, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball lost 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) to Concordia Irvine at the Conlan Center Wednesday night.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead in the first set, using a service ace from Marcela Frazzoni to move ahead 4-0. After the Penguins fell behind further 8-2, a service error from Concordia Irvine helped start a 4-0 Dominican run, including a pair of service aces from senior
Aimee Steinwand. The Eagles countered quickly, using a 5-0 run to extend their advantage to 13-6. A kill from Rachel Flynn gave Concordia Irvine a 17-8 lead, forcing the Penguins to call timeout. Junior
Cat Thomason had a kill to make it 18-10 but that was as close as Dominican would get. Riley Gill ended the set with a service ace, giving the Eagles a 25-12 win.
After falling behind again early in the second set, the Penguins took their first lead of the match on a service ace from
Hana Wyles to make it 4-3. After Concordia Irvine regained the lead 10-8, back-to-back kills from freshman
Eleni Loizou and Steinwand tied it back up. The Eagles took control of the set right back, going on an 8-1 run to move ahead 18-11. A kill by Even, followed by a service ace from Steinwand, cut the lead to 19-15. Concordia Irvine did not allow them to get any closer, making a 6-1 run to end the match.
Neither team could create much separation early in the third set. A block from Even and Thomason tied it 5-5 but the Eagles slowly started to pull away from there as a kill from Amber Rose made it 11-6. Dominican fought back into the set with a kill from freshman
Catherine Johnson, followed by an attack error from Concordia Irvine, to make it 12-11 and force the Eagles to call timeout. Coming out of the break, back-to-back kills from Steinwand and Thomason gave the Penguins a 13-12 advantage. Concordia Irvine countered with a 4-0 run to jump back in front but Dominican got a kill from Thomason and another from Steinwand to cut the Eagles' lead to 16-15. After an attack error from Concordia Irvine tied it, Steinwand and Even paired up on a block to give the Penguins a 17-16 lead. Dominican moved ahead 20-17 on a kill from Thomason and 22-19 on an attack error from the Eagles. A kill by Cindy Tran pulled Concordia Irvine back within 22-21, leading to a Penguin timeout. Jessica Diederich cut the Dominican lead to 23-22 with a kill and Tran followed with one of her own to tie it 23-23. Rose and Tran then teamed up on a block to give the Eagles a 24-23 lead before Flynn ended the set and match with a kill.
The Penguins will take the court again Saturday against Dixie State at 7 p.m. in the Conlan Center for Breast Cancer Awareness/Pink-Out Night. Live stats and video will be available for the match.
