SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team ended the 2016 campaign on a winning note with a 5-3 victory over Holy Names in the consolation bracket of the 2016 PacWest Women's Tennis Championships.
Alex Wartenberg secured the team win with a close match at No. 3 singles. Wartenberg fell 6-2 in set one but evened the match with a 6-2 victory over her own in set two. She fell behind 3-0 but rallied back and completed the comeback with a 7-5 victory. Dominican (8-10) took the early lead with two doubles victories. Wartenberg and
Brooke Briseño won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and
Solveig Karlsen and
Rickimae Torres won at No. 2 doubles. Brooke Briseño gave Dominican a 3-1 lead with her win at No. 2 singles and Torres won her No. 1 singles match to put Dominican an individual win away from taking the match. Mariel Bautista pulled the Hawks to 4-3 with a win at No. 4 singles but two minutes later Wartenberg wrapped things up. Karlsen's singles match went unfinished.
