SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team dropped its opening round match of the PacWest Championships 5-0 to No. 25 Academy of Art on Wednesday.
ART U (9-10) took the early lead over the Penguins (7-10) with a sweep of doubles action, with the Penguins coming up just short 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Solveig Karlsen and
Cori Beeby both fell 6-0, 6-0 in their No. 5 and 6 singles matches against the Thell-Lenntorp sisters.
Rickimae Torres won her first set 6-2 but that match went unfinished once ART U secured a fifth match.
The Penguins continue to the consolation bracket, where they'll finish the season out on Thursday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m. They'll take on Holy Names, who fell 5-0 to No. 24 Sonoma State in those two teams' opening round match.
