Penguins sweep Chaminade, fall at HPU to go 2-2 in Hawaii

KAILUA, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team swept Chaminade 5-0 and fell 5-2 to No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific to close out the Penguins' Hawaiian road trip.

Dominican resumed its match with Chaminade (0-6) after rain interrupted play on Tuesday. The Penguins led 2-0 at the time with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, and led at No. 2 doubles. The Penguins went on to complete the No. 2 doubles victory on Wednesday and picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Rickimae Torres won 6-1, 6-1 at over Kimberly Takara while Cori Beeby swept Hannah Parker. Kelly Zwicker's No. 3 doubles win moved her into a tie for third in career doubles wins (DII era) with 19. Additionally, her 17 career singles wins tie her for second in the DII era with assistant coach Emily Prescott.

The Penguins earned the wins by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles but were outmatched by the nationally-ranked Sharks, which boast the No. 15 and 41 singles players Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski. The duo is also ranked fourth in the nation in Division II at doubles.

The Penguins went 2-2 on the trip and are now 3-6 overall with eight matches to go. Dominican returns home to host four crucial matches against PacWest members Cal State LA, Dixie State, BYU-Hawaii, and Notre Dame de Namur. The homestand begins Saturday, March 19 vs. Cal State LA at 1:30 p.m. Dominican is currently 12th out of 15 teams in win percentage with the top 12 teams headed to the PacWest Championships, April 13-16 at the Suprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
