OAKLAND, Calif. – The Dominican Univeristy of California women's tennis team found itself on the short end of another close match on Sunday with a 5-4 loss at Holy Names.
After HNU (2-1) took an early lead at No. 2 singles, Dominican (0-2) sophomore
Rickimae Torres and junior Brooke Briseño evened the match with an 8-6 win over Leticia Vieira and Stella Dominik in the No. 1 matchup. Sophomore
Solveig Karlsen and junior
Cori Beeby took it to the wire in No. 3 doubles play but dropped the decision, 9-7, to Taylor Barajas and Mariel Bautista and HNU took a 2-1 lead.
Briseño earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles and freshmn
Alex Wartenberg rallied back for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Torres earned the win at No. 1 singles and the match came down to No. 4 singles but Vieira topped senior
Kelly Zwicker in a very close 7-6 (6-0), 6-4 decision.
The Penguins will head to San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a match at No. 23 Academy of Art. First serve is slated for 12 p.m.
