SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team began the 2016 campaign with a close 6-3 loss to Stanislaus State.
The match could have gone either way. Senior
Kelly Zwicker and freshman
Alex Wartenberg won No. 2 doubles for the Penguins (0-1) with an 8-6 decision over J'Ana Diamond and Lamella Belgica. The other two doubles matches were very close but the Warriors (1-0) took the upper hand in those and grabbed a 2-1 match lead.
Junior Brooke Briseño beat Jaella Conway in a tiebreaker to take No. 2 singles and Wartenberg helped the Penguins to another point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 4 singles play.
Rickimae Torres battled in No. 1 singles play and was forced to call injury timeout when she suffered from cramping after nearly five hours of play. She ended up bowing 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to Diamond.
Dominican will head to Holy Names on Sunday, Feb. 7 for an 11 a.m. match.
