SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team split with Texas A&M - Commerce on Sunday in the Penguins' last non-conference doubleheader before PacWest action begins.
In game one, the Penguins (2-9) snapped the Lions' (11-2) seven-game win streak, which included 8-1 and 17-9 victories over Academy of Art on Saturday. Dominican wasted no time on offense.
Tori Johnson singled, then promptly scored from first on
Catlyn Cavender's double to to right center. Cavender came scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. In the top of the second, the Lions got a run back with a Ciera Nunez RBI single, then tied the game with an unearned run on aggressive baserunning after a ball was bobbled in the outfield.
Shannon Rodriguez opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk.
Sarah McKenzie ran for her and moved up to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a perfect bunt single by
Alyssa Lanza. A Cavender single up the middle scored McKenzie and gave Dominican a 3-2 lead. With two outs and a full count,
Tayler Munoz connected for a double up the middle that brought home Cavender and Lanza.
Kate Harden (1-2) picked up her first of the season with a complete-game effort. She scatterd five hits with two strikeouts and just one earned run. Selena Rima (0-1) took the loss for the Lions with four earned runs on four hits over four innings.
The Lions touched game two starter Ashly Moriarity for a pair of runs in the second inning but the senior limited the damage and left the bases loaded. Rodriguez got the Penguins on the board with an RBI hit to left center and
Haley Cheek tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Moriarity helped her own cause on defense in the fourth when she applied a diving tag on a 4-2-5-2-6-1 rundown to get the runner diving back to third base. However, the Lions regained the lead in the fifth inning. Kylene Hatton began the inning with a four-pitch walk, then stole second. She moved to third on passed ball and scored on Cayla Dobson's RBI single to right center.
Indecision in the seventh inning on a pair of balls in the infield proved costly and led to an insurance run for the Lions that made it 4-2. Dominican rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Lanza reached on a throwing error by Nunez and raced all the way to third. She scored on Johnson's sacrifice fly but the Penguins left the bases loaded.
Moriarity (0-2) took the tough loss. She allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Katie Dean (3-0) earned the win and Brittany Woolridge earned the save with two innings of relief.
Both Cavender and Lanza finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate. Cavender had a pair of runs and an RBI. Lanza scored three runs with a stolen base.
Dominican will host the newest member of the PacWest, Concordia Irvine, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 and 28. First pitch each day is slated for 12 p.m. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
