SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team split its first PacWest doubleheader of the season with a 6-0 loss and 3-2 come-from-behind win in 10 innings versus Concordia Irvine.
After dropping game one, the Penguins (3-10/1-1 PacWest) rallied for their first walk-off win of the season. Dominican starter
Kelsey Goodner went six innings and surrendered one run, a solo shot in the sixth by Charlotte Foster. Dominican Head Coach
Sarah Byrne went to the bench in the bottom of the seventh and pinch hit freshman
Dahlen Dennis. The freshman recorded her first career hit in epic fashion by tying the game with a pinch-hit home run that cleared the left field fence and sent the game into extra innings. In the tenth inning, with the international tiebreaker invoked, CUI (17-2/1-1 PacWest) regained the lead on a wild pitch that allowed runner Hannah Howell to score all the way from second. The Penguins had
Alexis Chinchilla on second base for their half of the tenth, and
Keely Bowlan became the potential winning run after she singled to shallow left field. Senior
Tori Johnson followed with a double to left field. Left fielder Ryann Ferguson charged the ball but misplayed it. The ball rolled past her, which allowed Bowlan to score all the way from first.
Gaby Katafias (2-1) earned the win and allowed just one hit in four innings of relief.
In game one, Dominican starter
Katelyn Harden (1-3) worked out of trouble and left the bases loaded in the first but CUI took an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles broke things open with a four-run fifth inning.
Ashlyn Moriarity tossed three innings of scoreless relief. Grayson Harvey (9-0) scattered two hits in a complete-game effort for the Eagles.
The two teams square off again on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 and 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at
