IRVINE, Calif. — Dominican University of California continued its remarkable run with its sixth-consecutive PacWest Academic Achievement Award, as announced by the league office on Friday. The Penguins posted a program grade-point average of 3.40 in 2014-15.
In the eight years the conference has recognized the highest program GPA for the academic year, Dominican has been at the top of the list all six times since joining the conference. The Penguins set the highest achievement ever in the PacWest last season at 3.41.
"It is awe-inspiring to realize how hard our student-athletes have worked to make this sixth-consecutive award a reality. This award is a reflection of their hard work and dedication," said Dominican Acting Director of Athletics
Amy Henkelman. "I would like to recognize our Faculty Athletics Representative,
Dr. Christopher Leeds, who has helped our student-athletes attain this level of success in the classroom."
The PacWest set a new conference GPA record for the second-straight season with a 3.12, surpassing the previous mark of 3.075 from 2013-14. A record 10 programs eclipsed a 3.0 GPA, equaling the number from 2012-13.
"I'm so impressed with the outstanding quality of work put forth by our PacWest student-athletes," said PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue. "For our conference to combine for a 3.12 grade point average, the highest in the history of the award, shows their determination to be the very best in the classroom, as well as in competition. Dominican continues to show unparalleled commitment to academic excellence with its impressive streak."
BYU-Hawaii came in second with a 3.36 GPA, tied for the third-highest in conference history. Point Loma came in third place with a 3.29 GPA, the seventh-best in conference history, and California Baptist and Dixie State tied for fourth with a 3.23 GPA.
