Women's tennis hangs on for regional victory over Dixie State

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team won its third straight regional matchup with a close 5-4 victory over Dixie State on Sunday.

The Penguins took a 2-1 lead thanks to doubles competition, though they did have to surrender their opportunity to sweep doubles due to Solveig Karlsen's nagging injury and her need to play singles. Chloe Vicari and Kelly Zwicker took an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles and Rickimae Torres and Gianna Cupo teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Holding Karlsen out worked as she was able to battle to a 6-3 (10-5), 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. However, Cupo was forced to withdraw due to injury at No. 2 singles. Torres won her 10th match of the season and seventh straight, a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. The win ties her for most singles win in a season with Francesca Katafias, who is redshirting this year after surgery.

All eyes turned to Zwicker as she battled Zenja Draca in No. 4 singles in the last remaining match. Zwicker took the first set 6-3 only to see Draca tie the match with a 6-4 set two. Zwicker hung on in set 3, 6-4, as Draca double faulted in her final serve for Zwicker and the Penguins to secure the victory. The victory gives Zwicker 17 career singles victories, which ties her for second in program history in the Division II era with Dominican Assistant Coach Emily Prescott.

The Penguins will look to keep things rolling on Thursday, April 2 versus Cal State Stanislaus. That match will be hosted by The Club at Harbor Point in nearby Mill Valley, California. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
