SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team suffered a tough 6-3 loss to Holy Names on Sunday at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

The ninth-ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region, Dominican was edged by HNU, the regions' No. 10-ranked team. The Penguins entered singles play trailing 2-1 and came out on the short end of two closely contested matches.

Gianna Cupo fell in No. 2 singles to Jessica Ho 6-4, 7-6 and No. 5 Solveig Karlsen took an early lead with a 6-4 win but Leticia Vieira took the next two sets, also by the score of 6-4.

Rickimae Torres and Kelly Zwicker picked up Dominican's singles victories. Torres rallied back to top Mariel Bautista 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles play. Zwicker defeated Taylor Barajas 6-2, 6-3 in No. 4 singles. Torres and Cupo earned Dominican's No. 1 doubles win, an 8-6 decision over Jessica Ho and Chelsea Smithback.

The Penguins will head to Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Feb. 27 for a 12 p.m. match. The match is a makeup from the rainout on Feb. 8.
