Penguins shut out after pair of potential goals waived off

Mckenna Kimball goes after the ball in Monday's loss to Sonoma State.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team was shutout by visiting Sonoma State on Monday afternoon after a pair of calls didn't go the Penguin's way in a 2-0 loss.

The Seawolves (3-0-0) dominated the first half, netting a goal on 10 shots while Dominican attempted only one.

Redshirt freshman goalie Ashley Lentz was challenged time and time again, yet only allowed one goal in the first half, a penalty kick by Lauren Curtin after Dominican's Stephanie Pawek was called for a foul in the box. Curtin went to her left while Lentz anticipated the senior midfielder going the opposite side.

Freshman Sara Van Wagoner made it a 2-0 game in favor of SSU with a 25-yard shot to the upper corner of the goal in the 51st minute.

The Penguins (0-2-0) were much more aggressive in the second half with five shots. They would have had more had it not been for an offsides and a foul negating two shots — and would-be goals. Dominican senior Mckenna Kimball headed a ball two minutes after the Van Wagoner goal and had it saved but Kaila Wakida was there on the rebounds but in the scramble for the ball she was called offsides, keeping that goal off the record.

In the 85th minute, a Pawek corner kick set up a 50-50 ball for junior Lauren Gollnick, who made contact with backup SSU keeper Ashley Luis as the keeper came forward from the net. Gollnick's ball made it past Luis into the net but Gollnick was called for the foul and the Penguins were kept off the board yet again.

Lentz had a career day with nine saves in her first collegiate start.

The Penguins now hit the road to face Central Washington on Sept. 13 and Northwest Nazarene on Sept. 15. Both games are being hosted by NNU.
