Women's soccer caught off guard in season opener

Kendra Corsberg scored Dominican's first goal of 2014 off a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The 2014 Dominican University of California women's soccer season opener didn't go nearly as planned as the Penguins suffered a 5-1 loss to No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino in non-conference play.

Starting goalkeeper Rocky Ramos was forced from the game two minutes into the season after a hard collision in front of the goal. That forced freshman redshirt Ashley Lentz into action. Without time to warm back up, Lentz allowed a goal less than a minute after stepping onto the field when Kiana Quarles put back a rebound off a diving save by Lentz for the early 1-0 Coyotes (2-0-0) lead.

"The momentum turned early," said Dominican Head Coach Tara Koleski. "We had plenty of scoring opportunities and some good looks that could have changed the momentum back our way but we simply had too many defensive breakdowns today."

The Penguins (0-1-0) outshot the Coyotes 15-9. Two of those scoring opportunities came early from Lauren Gollnick in the 10th and 11th minutes. Her first attempt went high and in her second look beat the CSUSB defense and drew goalie Emily Whyte out of the box only to see her shot dribble left of the goal for a goal kick rather than an equalizer.

The Coyotes took advantage and extended the lead to 3-0 before senior captain Kendra Corsberg converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to put the Penguins on the board. That goal was negated a minute later when a potential Lentz save bounced off the keeper's leg into the goal.

A late goal in the 84th minute gave the Coyotes one final goal to make it 5-1.
