Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team split its matches on Friday in day two of the PacWest/GNAC Crossover. The Penguins swept Western Oregon 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 27-25) and were swept by Seattle Pacific 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) in the nightcap.
The Penguins (2-5) set the tone early against Simon Fraser (4-2). Dominican jumped out to a 15-2 lead in set one and never allowed more than a four-point run by the Clan in the entire match. Dominican allowed SFU back into the match in set two and trailed 12-11but gained the lead back thanks to kills from
Megan Callen and
Aimee Steinwand. Dominican pulled away late with a five-point run that began with another Steinwand kill, followed by a pair from
Samantha Rains, and was punctuated by a service ace from
Susanna Pilkerton. The Penguins started slow in the third set but after allowing a four-point run to see SFU lead 20-17, Dominican avoided set point with another Pilkerton kill and finished on a 9-5 run to take the match.
Dominican's second match of the night looked promising but after losing libero
Amanda Lee late in the first match with an ankle injury, the Penguins' young lineup was exploited by a more senior SPU (6-1) lineup. Freshman
Shannon Riggio-Kerley wore the libero jersey for the first two sets, then entered the lineup with junior
Sari Kwan wearing the jersey for the final set of the loss. Dominican looked to be in control early but saw a 19-14 lead unraveled by a six-point Falcons run. From there, the momentum turned to the visitors, who took an early 8-4 lead in set two and a 10-2 lead in set three. The Penguins battled from down 21-15 but after recording two points to pull within a point were unable to fend off match point a third time.
Steinwand had 19 kills on the day, followed from 18 by Powelson. Sophomore
Hannah Smith dished out 50 assists across the Penguins' six sets. Lee had 12 digs before departing for the day. Pilkerton had four service aces, followed by three from Powelson and two from Riggio-Kerley. Rains finished the day with three block solos and 11 block assists. She currently leads the tournament with 2.10 blocks per set.
