SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The 2013-14 Dominican University of California athletics season was another one for the history books as two thirds of Dominican's athletics teams finished with their best-ever finish in the NCAA Division II era.
Seniors
Myles Carrillo and
Kelsey Lardner were named Dominican's Student-Athletes of the Year.
One of two four-year seniors, Carrillo helped the Penguins to an incredible run which saw the Penguins record their hottest start in program history with a 6-0 start. The Tustin, Calif. native hit two game-winning shots, against Sonoma State and Azusa Pacific, and was named to two All-Tournament teams. Dominican also strung together an 11-game winning streak en route to taking second place in the Pacific West Conference and advancing to the PacWest Championship game.
Carrillo started all 28 games and was named All-PacWest Second Team, as was fellow four-year senior
Connor Haysbert. Haysbert was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Team for District 8 (West Region) and earned PacWest Player of the Week honors twice.
Despite seeing his season cut short due to a knee injury, senior
Devin Golston earned All-PacWest First Team honors. The Cerritos, Calif. native was named PacWest Player of the Week as well as the PacWest Defensive Player of the Week and to the PacWest Final Five four times over the course of the season. He was named to the PacWest/CCAA Challenge All-Tournament Team to begin the season.
Men's Basketball Head Coach
Booker T. Harris was named Dominican's Head Coach of the Year after the Penguins finished at an impressive 22-8.
Lardner helped lead the women's volleyball team to a program-best 12 wins in the Division II era. The Auburn, Calif. native finished as the Penguins' assists leading in the Division II era with 1729 and finished as the single-season career assists leader in the Division II era with 989 on the season. She dished out a career-high 59 assists in her final outing, a 3-1 victory over Azusa Pacific.
At one point, women's volleyball won seven consecutive contests and won six of its last 10 matches. Sophomore
Amanda Wasko earned All-PacWest Honorable Mention. Senior Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis finished with 821 career digs, the most by a Dominican player in the Division II era.
On the pitch, men's soccer players
Kolby Mitnick and
Swap Mushiana earned All-PacWest Third Team and Honorable Mention, respectively. The women's soccer team matched its win total from a season ago under new Head Coach Tara Koleski. Sophomore
Lauren Gollnick repeated as All-PacWest First Team forward. Junior co-captain
Mckenna Kimball scored 15 points on six goals and a trio of assists in 2013, to earn a First Team selection at midfielder. Co-captain
Kendra Corsberg was named All-Pac West Third Team at defender.
On Nov. 2, the Dominican cross country teams hosted the PacWest Championships at Stafford Lake in Novato, Calif. Senior
Justin Valdez earned All-PacWest Second Team honors with his Top 10 finish.
Women's basketball also set a Division II mark for most wins in a season and advanced to the PacWest Championships for the first time in program history. Senior
Salonika Quewon-Owens garnered All-PacWest Honorable Mention.
In the spring, men's golf made the PacWest aware of its presence in a big way. The Penguins, who hold the No. 25 freshman impact rating, finished third at the PacWest Championships in mid-April. Sophomore
Pomi Milton finished atop the leaderboard after winning a one-hole playoff and took home All-PacWest First Team Honors.
Drew Nelson also earned All-PacWest First Team Honors and was named the conference Freshman of the Year. Nelson continued on as an individual at the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals in Austin, Texas and finished in 37th place.
The women's golf team improved over 80 shots a tournament from last season and finished a spot higher this season at the PacWest Championships.
Men's lacrosse team won its second straight Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association championship with a program-record nine wins.
Kevin Powers led the WILA in goals (36) and points (51), which were also career-highs for the junior. The 2014 WILA Offensive Player of the Year, Powers was named WILA Offensive Player of the Week and to the Lacrosse Magazine Honor Roll three times each. Nine other players also received All-WILA Team honors.
Women's tennis recorded its first winning season in the Division II era and had a four-match winning streak, all against PacWest programs. The program was ranked No. 10 in the region.
Women's softball recorded the most wins in the Division II era. The team boasted several program records, including highest batting average and lowest ERA in the Division II era. The Penguins were the best PacWest program in the Bay Area with a 9-3 mark against their Bay Area counterparts.
Freshman
Catlyn Cavender, who batted a team-high .364 batting average and led the Penguins with a .412 on-base percentage, was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-West Region Women's Softball Second Team as a utility player. She was also named All-PacWest Second Team At-Large.
Sophomore
Ashlyn Moriarity and senior
Kayleigh Klingberg were both named to the All-PacWest Third Team. Moriarity was a large part of the team's success with 17 wins and a 2.73 ERA in the circle, both single-season records in the Division II era. At the plate, Klingberg finishes as the career leader in nearly every offensive category during the Division II era: at bats, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, and total bases.
