Dominican ties PLNU for the 2024-25 PacWest Academic Achievement Award

Penguins make it a dozen

IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican athletics returned to the top of the academic ladder in the Pacific West Conference as they tied Point Loma for the 2024-25 Academic Achievement Award on Thursday.
 
" Twelve PacWest academic awards over 15 years is a huge accomplishment from Dominican student-athletes, coaches, staff and faculty," Dominican athletic director Amy Henkelman said. "We're honored, grateful and excited to share this award with Point Loma and would like to congratulate them as well.  We also want to thank our other PacWest colleagues on pushing us to be the best we can be academically and athletically. Every year the bar keeps getting set higher. Congratulations to our Dominican student-athletes, coaches, [Faculty Athletic Representative] Dr. Sammy Vogel -Seidenberg, President Nicola Pitchford, staff and faculty. This is testament to all their hard work and dedication."
 
The Penguins have now won 12 PacWest Academic Achievement Awards, never finishing below second in the program's history as a member of the conference. This season Dominican finished with a program wide GPA of 3.52 with Point Loma also finishing with a 3.52 for the second year in a row. The Sea Lions and Penguins have combined to win the past nine awards this season. Biola finished third with a GPA of 3.51, beating out newcomer Vanguard (3.44) and Azusa Pacific (3.42) to round out the top-5.
 
Gender specific, Point Loma had the top GPA for women's sports at 3.63, followed very closely by Dominican (3.60), Vanguard (3.54), Biola (3.53), Azusa Pacific (3.52) and Chaminade (3.50). For overall men, Biola led at 3.48 with Menlo next (3.44), followed by Dominican and Vanguard (3.39), Point Loma (3.38), and Azusa Pacific (3.35).
