LOS ANGELES — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team opened the 2014-15 campaign Sept. 25-26 in the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by Cal State LA.
In singles play,
Kelly Zwicker opened up with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bethany Duval of Azusa Pacific. Zwicker fell in the second round to Cal State Stanislaus' Jessica Laurie 6-3, 6-3.
Rickimae Torres also won her opening match, a tightly-contested 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win over Academy of Art's Jenny Johansson. Torres battled Azusa Pacific's Valeriia Kashina but eventually bowed 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.
Gianna Cupo topped Stormy Dvorak of Dixie State with a resounding 7-6, 6-2 victory before bowing to Azusa Pacific's Natalie Johnson 6-1, 6-1. Soleveig Karlseon beat Academy of ARt's Gabriela Rivas 6-2, 6-1 but also fell in her second match. She dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Nozomi Matsuoka of host Cal State LA.
Chloe Vicari defeated Cal State Stanislaus' Analyssa Tallas 6-2, 6-3. She would later fall to Sonoma State's Kaitlyn Heathcock, 6-2, 6-1.
Francesca Katafias fell to Azusa Pacific's Danela Ingwaldson, 6-1, 6-1, in her only singles match of the weekend.
Mackenzie Flanagan fell in her lone singles match to to Holy Names' Chelsea Smithback, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, the Penguins hung in there but were unable to advance in the tournament. Vicari and Torres drew a first-round bye but fell 8-6 in the second round to Dixie State's duo of Karolin Kukaras and Joy Naigeaon. Cupo and Karlsen fell 8-6 to CSULA's Matsuoka and Sonia Landeros. Zwicker and Katafias fell 9-7 to HNU's Jessica Ho and Letica Viera.
The Penguins continue their fall season when they head to Rohnert Park, California on Oct. 11-12 for the Sonoma State Invitational. Dominican wraps up the fall season Oct. 17-19 at the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament in Turlock, California.
