TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team concluded its successful fall over the weekend with a strong showing at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. Junior
Kelly Zwicker led the Penguins, winning all of her matches to win the Flight B singles championship.
Zwicker's toughest match came in the opening round against Holy Names' Taylor Barajas. Zwicker edged her opponent, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, then faced UC Santa Cruz's Islay Fossitt, who had a first-round bye. Zwicker won easily, 6-0, 6-1, then beat Sonoma State's Julie Rea 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. Zwicker defeated Sonoma State's Mariann Bukich 6-3, 6-4 to take home the Flight B championship.
Freshman
Rickimae Torres, who earned the No. 1 seed in Flight A singles play after going undefeated in the Sonoma State Invitational the previous weekend, advanced to the finals of her flight. Torres fell to No. 2 seed Kaitlyn Haithcock of the host Warriors in the final after earning wins in her first three matches. She opened play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Holy Names' Jessica Ho, and held on against Cal State Stanislaus' Analyssa Tallas 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the quarterfinals. Torres beat the Warriors' J'ana Diamond 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the finals.
After dropping her first match,
Gianna Cupo rebounded to advanced to the Flight A consolation championship. She dropped her opening match, 6-0, 6-1, to Sonoma State's Jordyn Kearney. From there, she shutout UC Santa Cruz's Soph Lundeberg 6-0, 6-0 and took the semfinal 6-1, 6-1, against the Banana Slugs' Sylvia Brummitt. Cupo sustained an injury, however, which kept her from competing for the championship against Cal State Stanislaus' Jessica Laurie.
Laurie, the No. 3 seed in the flight, topped Karlsen 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Chloe Vicari fell to Laurie 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. Vicari advanced to the semifinals with her 6-3, 6-1 vicotry over UC Santa Cruz's Zoe Middleton-Brook.
Chloe Vicari fell to Haithcock 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of singles play.
Solveig Karlsen also fell in the opening round of Flight A in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Holy Names' Mauriel Bautista.
Mackenzie Flanagan fell 6-1, 6-1 to Amaru Hernandez of Holy Names in their opening match. Flanagan won her quarterfinal qualifier 7-5, 6-2 against Cal State Stanislaus' Sarah Cardenas, however fell in the Flight B quarterfinals in a nailbiter, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 to the Warriors' Jessica Stokes.
In doubles play, Vicari and Karlsen dropped their doubles match, 8-5 to HNU's Barajas and Lexi Bevins. The Dominican pair received a bye in consolation play and came back strong on Sunday with an 8-6 victory over SSU's Rea and Jacqueline Ward. Karlsen and Vicari earned an 8-2 victory to win the consolation final over the Warriors' Analyssa Talles and Jessica Stoakes
Zwicker and Flanagan fell 8-2 in the opening round to the Warriors' Diamond and Laurie. They bounced back with an 8-3 victory in the consolation quaterfinals but ended doubles play with an 8-1 semfinals loss to Talles and Stoakes.
Cupo and Torres, who earned the No. 3 seed, won 8-1 against UC Santa Cruz's Natalia Kozlova and Alex Turnure. They fell to Sonoma State's Karlee Budge and Bukich 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
