Torres wins Flight A singles bracket at SSU Invitational

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Rickiemae Torres showed why she'll be an impact player for the Dominican University of California women's tennis team. The freshman won all four of her singles matches over the weekend to take home the Flight A singles championship on Sunday.

Torres opened up play by dispatching Holy Names' Chelsea Smithback 6-0, 6-2. She defeated the flight's No. 3 seed, Academy of Art's Jenny Johanssson with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 decision to move to the semifinals. There, she knocked off the No. 1 seed, Academy of Art's Nina Gajdosikova, 6-2, 7-5. In the finals, Torres breezed past the No. 2 seed, Academy of Art's Lucy Zavarcikova 6-3, 6-0.

"Despite having injuries, the girls dug deep and found ways to win," said Head Coach Molly Aloia. "I'm proud of the team, especially Rickiemae, who came in as a freshman and won Flight A, which is huge for this program."

Kelly Zwicker also had a succesful showing with a third-place finish in Flight B singles play. Zwicker defeated Holy Names' Leticica Vieira in her opening round, 6-2, 6-4. She aslo edged her flight's No. 1 seed, Academy of Art's Kinga Kurczbuch, 4-6, 6-0, 10-5. Zwicker fell in the semi-finals to Sonoma State's Julie Rea, 6-0, 6-2. Zwicker topped Lexi Blevins of Holy Names to take third place in the flight.

Gianna Cupo dropped her opening match to SSU's Jordyn Kearney, 6-2, 6-1. She rebounded on Sunday with a63-, 6-1 victory over Holy Names' Taylor Barajas 6-2, 7-5. Cupo fell 6-3, 6-1 to Chelsea Smithback in the consolation final of Flight A.

Solveig Karlsen fell 6-4, 7-5 in her first match to Sonoma State's Karlee Budge. Karlsen had a second-round bye before falling to Smithback, 5-7, 6-3, 10-4, in the consolation semifinal. She took ninth place with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Barajas.

Mackenzie Flanagan opened play with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to HNU's Amaru Hernandez and, after a bye, rebounded with a 3-6, 7-6, 10-3 victory over SSU's Leah Quilty to advance to the Flight B consolation championship. There, she fell to Vieira 6-2, 6-2.

Francesca Katafias beat the Seawolves' Janie Anderson, 6-0, 6-2, then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to SSU's Julie Rea.

Chole Vicari lost both of her first Flight A singles matches to Holy Names players, dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Mariel Bautista and a 6-2, 7-5 match to Barajas. She finished in 12th place with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Sonoma State's Mariann Bukich.

In doubles play, the Penguins showed success with wins in the teams' opening matches. Vicari and Karlsen topped Holy Names' Smithback and Vieria 9-8 before falling to SSU duo Kearney and Haithcock, 8-3. Torres and Cupo beat the Seawolves' Rea and Jackie Ward 8-4, then fell to ART U's Gajdosikova and Zavarcikova 8-3. Katafias and Zwicker narrowly defeated Holy Names' Bevins and Hernandez 9-7 before falling 8-4 to Johansson and Kurczbuch.

"I'm excited for our positive fall results and look forward to what we can accomplish in the spring," added Aloia.

Dominican will wrap up the fall season at the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament on Oct. 17.
