Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — Entering Monday's game, the Dominican University of California women's soccer team had played four games seperated by one goal and two double overtime draws. That challenging first half of the season made for familiar territory as the Penguins battled back twice to tie Academy of Art University in non-conference action, then win it, 3-2, in double overtime.
The Penguins fought to a scoreless match at intermission, then allowed a goal in the 50th minute off of a corner kick, one of six they attempted in the match. Hannah Emmett got the ball to the head of of Mirand Cornellussen, who headed from the near post to the far post.
Jill Thomas answered just five minutes later for the Penguins (3-4-2).
Mckenna Kimball served up a high cross from the left corner and Thomas headed it in for her first score of the season.
The Urban Knights took the lead right back less than two minutes later, at the 62-minute mark, on a low cross from Giovanni Plater to Louise Fillingham, who scored from six yards out.
Kimball had a hand in tying the game yet again for Dominican in the 77th minute.
Jessica Hinsken connected to Kimball for a breakaway on an open goal and buried her shot from 10 yards out.
After the flurry of scoring, neither team scored again until the 105th minute. Kimball played a cross from the left side to the far post.
Kaila Wakida appeared to have flubbed her shot just feet in front of the goal. The ball, which looked to be traveling well right of the goal, instead spun back, off the post, and past diving ART U goalkeeper Rachael Rempe. The golden goal was Wakida's first of the season.
"I think today demonstrated that we have a lot of character and ability. Coming off of a couple of losses it's been a tough go-around and people stepped up," said Head Coach
Tara Koleski. "The workrate that Mckenna had today set an example for the entire team."
Kimball's goal and pair of assists moved her into the team lead in both goals (2), assists (2), and points (4). She passed
Lauren Gollnick, who currently has a pair of goals and four points, but was limited to 14 minutes on Monday due to illness.
Dominican goalkeeper
Megan Herring made five saves, giving her 37 on the season.
