LOS ANGELES — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team sent
Francesca Katafias,
Kelly Zwicker,
Emily Prescott, and
Irina Morozova to the USTA/ITA West Regional Championships hosted by Cal State LA and the latter two had impressive showings in the tournament.
Katafias was chased in the first round by Dixie State University's Stormy Dvorak, 6-0, 6-2. Zwicker dropped her match, 6-1, 6-0, to Poin Loma's Preetchika Venugopal. Zwicker and Katafias fell in the opening round of doubles play to Sonoma State's Lauren Ha and Sheena Johnson.
Prescott topped the Red Storm's Laura Hartle 6-3, 6-0. She then came out on top of a tightly contested match to break through versus Point Loma's Hope Penner, 7-5, 6-0. Prescott finally fell to FPU's Petra Jurova, 6-1, 6-1.
Morozova opened up play by topping Megan Lee of Fresno Pacific University 6-1, 6-3. She then skimmed by UC San Diego's Tara Vanooteghem 6-4, 6-3. Morozova also fell in the round of 16 to BYU-Hawaii's Marika Kobayashi.
In doubles play, Morozova and Prescott topped Cal State LA's Sydney Postal and Tiffany Leung 9-8, then blew past Laura Wilke and Maiko Hermsmeier of UC San Diego by the score of 8-2. The Penguins finally fell in the quarterfinals to BYU-Hawaii's Kobayashi and Marietta Tuioneteoa 8-4. The Seasiders' doubles pairing completed the 2012-13 season as one half of the No. 9 doubles pairing in the country.
"The regionals were a good showing for the team," said head coach Alex Poorta. "I'm proud of how hard everybody competed and getting the result in some close wins. We have been preparing and working hard for the season and it's beginning to pay off."
The Penguins host the Dominican Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13 at home in the John F. Allen Athletics Complex. The tournament will also feature Arizona Christian University, Sonoma State, and Holy Names University.
