Women's volleyball swept on first day of Seawolf Spike

Megan Callen had 10 kills on the day but Dominican dropped both of its matches on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Friday the 13th wasn't kind to the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team, which dropped a pair of matches in the first day of the Seawolf Spike hosted by Sonoma State.

After dropping a close 3-2 decision to San Francisco State (4-1) last weekend in the Otter Classic, Dominican (1-5) fell quickly 3-0 (15-25, 12-25, 11-25). The Penguins, without seniors Kelsey Lardner and Jessica Jones, struggled to get going offensively. Dominican tallied just 18 kills in the match, with five coming from sophomore Amanda Wasko. Fellow sophomore Sari Kwan provided a match-high 16 digs and sophomore Rebecca Schira, who saw the majority of time setting in Lardner's absence, dished out 17 assists and recorded a pair of service aces.

Dominican showed signs of life in the third set against the No. 24 Sonoma Seawolves (4-1) but a 7-0 SSU lead in that set led to another sweep with the Penguins falling 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 in straight sets. Senior Hannah Stocking-Siagkris had eight kills and Megan Callen added six but it wasn't enough to offset Sonoma State's pair of sophomore outside hitters, Madelyn Densberger and Caylie Seitz, who had nine apiece. Five different Dominican players recorded seven or more digs in the match, led by freshman Madeline Powelson.

Jones is expected to return to the team on Saturday while Lardner is considered day-to-day. The Penguins open day two versus Chico State at 11:15 a.m. and face Cal State Stanislaus at 3:45 p.m. Live coverage is available from Sonoma State at www.sonomaseawolves.com/spike.
