SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California Department of Athletics has named
Josh Sims the department's Athletic Trainer of the Month for the month of March.
“Since March was National Athletic Training Month, we decided to take this opportunity to recognize Josh's hard work and dedication,” said Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities
Patrick Huser. “Our trainers are really some of the unsung heroes of the department.”
It's only fitting that the athletic trainer who grew up in Talent, Ore. earn such an honor. Sims, who has had stints with the San Francisco 49ers and the football program at his alma mater, Oregon State, also serves as the primary athletic trainer for the Dominican women's volleyball and men's basketball and lacrosse programs.
Sims spent much of his month on the road tending to lacrosse players during their trip to North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Two-time WILA Offensive Player of the Week Cody Bernstein, who learned of the news late last week, even took to Twitter to laud Josh as “#TheMan.”
In 2010 with the 49ers, Sims won a “tape off” with future trainers demonstrating the proper ankle-taping techniques. He still counts beating the students, who had no professional experience, as one of his greatest accomplishments.
Sims currently resides in San Rafael with his wife Jenn, who rolled her eyes when asked for comment.
“I didn't even know we had that award,” said fellow Dominican Athletic Trainer Tara Hodge. “It's just the two of us. Is this an April Fool's joke or something?”
