Women's volleyball completes come-from-behind victory vs. NDNU

Kelsey Lardner helped steady the Penguins in their 3-2 come-from-behind victory over NDNU on Thursday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — With their backs against the wall several times, the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team completed a thrilling 3-2 (26-28, 21-25, 25-13, 25-14, 16-14) come-from-behind victory over Notre Dame de Namur University in Pacific West Conferernce action on Thursday night in the Conlan Center.

"We showed a lot of depth and a lot of resilience tonight. To really have to make a decision to come out in set three that we were going to have a road to a win but that we could do it. I could see that they were ready to battle so I'm proud of them for turning it around," said Head Coach Gayle Stammer. "We've come a long way this season. They know what's it like to win now and it sure beats the alternative."

The Penguins (10-17/7-10) appeared to take the Argos (5-21/2-15) for granted, especially after having made quick work of their cross-bay rival in a 3-0 sweep back on Oct. 22.

The Argos staked an 11-7 lead early and forced a Penguins timeout. Dominican pulled within a point, 11-10, and eventually took a 19-18 lead. That forced the Argos to take a timeout of their own and they responded with seven of the set's final 10 points for a 28-26 set one victory.

Despite staking an early 7-2 lead in set two, Dominican didn't get much traction from its hitters, recording only eight kills but making just as many errors. An 18-16 Penguins lead quickly evaporated into a 24-20 lead for the Argos. A Jessica Jones kill halted the five-point skid but Brooke DeMiguel answered with a kill on set point.

Things were compounded by the fact that setter Kelsey Lardner came up limping after slamming into the scorer's table early in the match. Lardner remained in the game and ended up dishout out a match-high 45 assists to go with 11 digs.

Her leadership helped the Penguins regroup after intermission. The team used a 9-1 run to build a 19-9 lead and it was smooth sailing from there. After taking the third set 25-13, the Penguins built an 8-3 lead in set four. The Penguins were extremely efficient in their hitting, recording 13 kills on just 23 attempts, while committing a single error, for a .522 hitting percentage in the set.

Set five looked as though the Penguins' efforts would be for naught but despite trailing 8-3, Dominican bounced back yet again with eight of the next nine points. NDNU went on a four-point run to bring the set to 13-11, and stood on the brink with match point at 14-13, but the Penguins answered with a pair of Jones kills and a Megan Callen block to secure the match.

"Once we got Kelsey taped up and comfortable with that ankle, she was able to go out there and be successful," said Stammer. "She put a lot on Amanda Wasko and she came out and made so many good decisions and it helped everybody to limit their errors."

Wasko went about her business quietly but ended up with a team-high 14 kills on 51 attempts and recorded a double-double with 11 digs. Jones finished with 11 kills and just missed a double-double herself with nine digs. Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis and Madeline Powelson each added 11 digs while the Penguins were led by libero Amanda Lee's 14.

Samantha Rains finished with 10 block assists and had three block solos while her fellow middle, Callen, recorded six block solos and had three block assists. As a team, Dominican made 23.5 blocks compared to NDNU's eight.

The Argos were led by Dominique Tarrant's 15 kills.

Dominican will hit the road for the final time this season on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when the Penguins head to Fresno Pacific University. Dominican is currently in seventh place in the PacWest and will look to keep eighth-place FPU (11-11/6-9) from gaining ground. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
