Penguins drop final game of road trip to Hawai'i Pacific

Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team dropped the final match of its three-game swing through Hawai'i with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-17) loss to Hawai'i Pacific University on Saturday night.

The Sea Warriors (16-8/10-6) opened the match with a 7-0 run but the Penguins (9-17/6-10) rallied back to take an 11-10 lead. The two teams traded points back and forth, which brought the set to 24-24. A kill by HPU's Haley Doerfler gave the Sea Warriors set point but back-to-back kills from Amanda Wasko and Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis gave the Penguins set point. The home team rattled off the next three points though on kills by Marie Fujii, Kasey Thompson, and Pomai Recca to take the set, 28-26.

Set two was just as tightly contested, featuring 10 ties and a pair of lead changes. Dominican led 20-18 but couldn't close out the set. Three consecutive errors handed the lead to the Sea Warriors, who scored four of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead with the 25-22 victory. Nine of the final 11 points scored by the Sea Warriors in the set came by way of Dominican errors.

Dominican took a 5-4 lead in set three but the lead was short lived. HPU rattled off nine of the next 10 points to take a 13-6 lead. The Penguins would pull no closer than five points before falling 25-17.

Dominican flashed some life to start the third set, taking a 5-4 lead. However, there would be no comeback. HPU scored nine of the next 10 points to take control. At 14-8, Recca entered the match and promptly got a kill on her first swing to a thunderous ovation from the home crowd. Buyuan then turned the clock back to her outside hitter days as she put away three consecutive balls to the delight of the fans. Asuncion was also on the floor and gave HPU supporters something to remember her by as she had two acrobatic digs down the stretch.  

Wasko led all players with 12 kills, followed by 11 from Stocking-Siagrkis. Kelsey Lardner had 32 assists and 10 digs, as well as a pair of service aces. Libero Amanda Lee led the Penguins with 11 digs.

Pomai Recca and Kasey Thompson led HPU with nine kills apiece. Amanda Moriarty led all players with 13 digs.

Despite a tought road trip, the Penguins are still 7-3 in their last 10 matches. They return home to the Conlan Center on Thursday, Nov. 7 when they face Bay Area rival Notre Dame de Namur University.
